Babette M. Pluim, M.D., Ph.D.
Babette Pluim, MD., Ph.D., is sports physician and Medical Director of the Royal Netherlands Lawn Tennis Association. She is the current President of the Society for Tennis Medicine and Science (STMS). Dr. Pluim is the team physician of the Dutch Davis Cup and Fed Cup teams, and tournament doctor at the ATP and WTA tournaments in 's-Hertogenbosch, Amersfoort, and Rotterdam (the Netherlands).
Dr. Pluim is a member of the ITF Sports Medical Commission, the ITF Wheelchair Tennis Medical Commission, and the Age Eligibility Panel of the WTA Tour. She is editor-in-chief of Medicine and Science in Tennis, the journal of the STMS, and "Geneeskunde en Sport," the scientific journal of the Netherlands Association of Sports Medicine. With Miguel Crespo and Machar Reid, she co-edited the book Tennis Medicine for Tennis Coaches. She wrote the chapter Medical Care of Tennis Players for the IOC Handbook of Sports Medicine and Science: Tennis.
Marc R. Safran, M.D.
Dr. Safran, a former junior and collegiate tennis player, is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and interested in biomechanics. He is a board member of the Society for Tennis Medicine and Science and chairman of the Sports Medicine Committee of the San Diego Sports Science Council. He is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, as well as a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. He has been actively involved in tennis injury related research since 1995. Dr. Safran has been the medical director of the WTA Tournament in San Diego since 1995 and the medical consultant of the USTA Girl's 16's National Hardcourt Championships in San Diego since 1996. He has served as a neutral site physician at several Davis Cup ties since 1996.
Dr. Safran's has written several book chapters and papers on tennis injuries in addition to lecturing on the topics related to specific tennis injuries and injuries in junior tennis players. He has co-authored a book on sports medicine written for physicians and trainers — The Spiral Manual of Sports Medicine (Lippincott-Raven Publishers, 1998) and Instructions for Sports Medicine Patients (WB Saunders-Mosby, 2001) written for sports medicine patients.
